The art of photographing people is rooted in the ability to listen, to observe, and to connect with another human being. Whether your aim is a formal portrait or a candid document of a moment, this workshop with Genevieve Russell can help you use light to enhance a mood, compose a compelling image, and recognize the unique expression of your subject. It is designed for intermediate-level photographers who would like to make stronger, more meaningful portraits and who are hesitant about approaching people.
Through daily assignments, we develop the necessary awareness and sensitivity to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits as we learn effective methods for approaching strangers and putting friends and family at ease. With stunning landscapes and a colorful, diverse population, Santa Fe and northern New Mexico provide a wealth of portrait opportunities to test new found skills and build confidence. Daily field sessions follow morning critiques, lectures, and visits from several successful portrait photographers. This is a spirited, insightful week of good coaching, fun, and the challenge of moving beyond where you thought you could go in photographing people.
Genevieve Russell is a photographer, personal historian, and producer who has been involved with photography and storytelling for nearly ten years.
